The children in Year 3 have been dedicated engineers working on their project of ‘What impact has Engineering had on the lives of Humans?’
The children have investigated the difference between rivers and canals and researched the introduction of canals in the 1770’s. The children used maps and an Atlas to explore different rivers in the United Kingdom and the children learnt interesting facts about the history of Canals. The children used drama to role play scenes of how a horse- drawn boat was used and learnt how it was seen as an efficient way to transport goods along Britain’s canal system in the 18th Century.
The design team in Merlin Class researched different bridges by learning about their structures, distinguished features, the engineer who constructed the bridge and the reason why it was built. The children loved researching about different bridges from all around the world and were proud to share their learning with their peers.
The children used junk modelling materials to create a prototype of their planned designs and explored how they could make their bridges stronger and the materials they would need to use to create their final design.
The children have taken their roles very seriously and have an eye to future developments to our waterways!
